Q. What are search engines and how do they work?
A. Search engines and directories are how most people find web sites. The most powerful search engines use spiders that roam the Internet and index information they find. Lots of spammers and some web hosting companies tell you they will register your site with millions of search engines for amounts that vary from free to 100's of dollars. The truth is, nobody can guarantee whether any search engine or directory will ever include your site and they can't guarantee that if it is included it won't be dumped. Furthermore, unless you pay to advertise, 99% of your traffic will come from the 5 or 6 top search engines.

Engines You can also do it yourself. Go to the top search engines, read the instructions and submit your site using their free service. The link usually says "Submit a Site" or "Add a Page". Be sure to place a free listing with a link to your site at Online Cities SM and at StarCities. These are huge, busy sites that have been around for years and all the major search engines spider them regularly. Your site will most likely be added to the search engines as they spider them. You can also advertise on these sites. A text ad in the Online Cities Network with a link to your site is $100 per month. Whatever you do, don't do business with spammers and use your head. Don't believe anyone who guarantees what Yahoo or any other search engine will do.
